Ségur-le-Château
Visit of the village ...

On a beautiful sunny day, head to the pretty, charming village of Ségur-le-Château. It is easily discovered on foot, strolling along the sandstone of its flowery streets. It is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and this distinction rewards the beauty of its well-preserved heritage. Half-timbered houses, carved granite door frames, medieval turrets… We travel back in time as we walk! In summer, it is a joyful village with a local producers' market on Monday evenings, which brings together villagers and holidaymakers on the square, near the Auvézère which surrounds the village with a meander.

A village of justice

Ségur-le-Château (Ségur means place-safe) was the seat of a court of appeal (the court of calls) which rendered justice to the 350 Lords of the surroundings between the 15th and the 18th century. The hearings were held on the Place du Champ de Foire, a pleasant place today, to appreciate the sweetness of life in Ségur-le-Château. Start the Ségur-le-Château Discovery Circuit here, following the signs from the square.

You will then cross the Notre-Dame bridge which also offers beautiful views of the castle and the village, its slate roofs (the village has joined the denomination "Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Vézère Ardoise" ), which soar skyward. At the end of the day, the light is charming! The Castle that you see and which gave part of its name to the village, dates from the 11th-15th centuries. It was owned by the Viscount of Limoges and saw the birth of Jean d'Albret who was King of Navarre.

It is in the old town that the most beautiful sets of houses dating from the Middle Ages are to be found. We see stalls, where we traded, on the ground floor of his home. Near the bridge is an old flour mill. In the past, there were 3 mills in the town and to use them, the inhabitants paid a tax, the Ban, to the Lord. The Auvézère river, which has its source in Haute-Vienne, surrounds and separates the village. Take a walk on the two banks which are both interesting.
